The Bible uses Egypt as the archetype of the World System. It is defined by the River (Nile), which provided a guaranteed, predictable caloric surplus.
"And the children of Israel said to them, 'Oh, that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat and when we ate bread to the full!'"
Exodus 16:3
The Welfare Trap:
When famine hit the Levant (Canaan), Jacob's family (Joseph's brothers) went to Egypt. Why? Because Egypt was the "Big Fat Food Source." It was the ancient Welfare State.

THEOLOGICAL INSIGHT: THE WOMB OF EMPIRES
The Problem: The Levant (Canaan) was environmentally hostile. It relied on rain (uncertain) rather than the river (constant). It could not support the massive population explosion required to turn Jacob's clan of 70 into a nation of millions.
The Solution (Gestational Theory):
God used Egypt not just as a prison, but as a Womb. The "Steady Pulse of Grain" functioned like the nutrient supply of a placenta. It allowed the Hebrews to gestate in a high-calorie, protected environment until they reached critical mass.
The Birth:
A womb is a sanctuary for a fetus, but a tomb for an adult. When the gestation period was over, God "Delivered" them. The Exodus was the labor pain; the Red Sea was the water breaking. To stay in the comfort of the Grain Economy past full term would have been death. They were expelled into the Desert to become adults (Warriors/Shepherds).
